Best Pay and Play Golf Courses in Essex

Golf Match UK10 March 2026

Why Pay and Play?

Not everyone wants to commit to a full membership. Maybe you're just getting into golf, maybe you like mixing up where you play, or maybe you just want a casual round without the politics of a members' bar. Whatever your reason, Essex has some cracking pay and play options.

We've pulled together some of the best ones across the county. Green fees vary depending on the day and time, but you'll find something here whether you've got twenty quid or fifty to spend.

Our Top Picks

Channels Golf Club, Chelmsford

A proper 18-hole course that punches above its weight for a pay and play. The layout is interesting without being gimmicky, and the greens are well looked after. Weekday rates are reasonable and it rarely feels overcrowded on a Tuesday morning.

Good to know: They do twilight rates from around 2pm which are well worth it in summer.

Benton Hall, Witham

Two courses here, the main Championship course and a shorter Par 3. The Championship layout is challenging enough to keep single-figure players honest, but it's not going to ruin a beginner's day either. The clubhouse is decent and the food is solid.

Good to know: The Par 3 course is great if you're short on time or bringing someone new to the game.

Stapleford Abbotts, Romford

Three loops of nine holes give you plenty of variety. The course sits on higher ground so you get some good views on a clear day. Drainage is surprisingly good for Essex clay, which means it plays well even in winter.

Good to know: Book the early morning slots for the best rates and quietest conditions.

Warley Park, Brentwood

A solid 27-hole complex split into three nines. Nothing flashy, just a well-maintained course at fair prices. It's popular with societies too, so weekends can be busy. Midweek is the way to go.

Good to know: The 27-hole setup means you can play different combinations each visit.

Top Meadow, Upminster

If you want something straightforward and affordable, Top Meadow fits the bill. It's not the longest course but the layout has some decent holes and the condition has improved a lot in recent years.

Good to know: One of the more affordable options in the Romford/Upminster area.

Regiment Way, Chelmsford

A newer course that's already earning a good reputation. The design makes use of the natural landscape well and it drains better than most in the area. Green fees are competitive and you get a lot of course for the money.

Good to know: They run some good offers through their website, worth checking before you book.

Orsett Golf Club, Orsett

Technically more of a traditional members' club, but they welcome visitors on certain days. If you can get a slot, this is one of the best conditioned courses in south Essex. The heathland-style layout feels different to the typical Essex parkland course.

Good to know: Call ahead to check visitor availability. It's worth the effort.

Crondon Park, Stock

A well-designed course with some memorable holes. The par 3s are particularly good here. It's a popular venue for society days which tells you something about the quality and value on offer.

Good to know: The course can get soft in winter but plays beautifully from April onwards.

How to Get the Best Value

  • Play twilight. Most courses drop their prices from mid-afternoon. You won't finish 18 in winter, but in summer you've got plenty of daylight.
  • Book midweek. Weekend rates are almost always higher. If you can play on a Wednesday, do it.
  • Check for online booking discounts. Some courses offer cheaper rates when you book through their website rather than calling up.
  • Try the winter. Green fees often drop between November and March. Wrap up warm and save yourself a few pounds.
