Twilight Golf: The Best Value Way to Play
What Is Twilight Golf?
Twilight golf means playing in the late afternoon or early evening, usually from around 2pm or 3pm onwards. Courses charge reduced rates for these slots because you might not finish a full 18 before it gets dark (depending on the time of year).
In summer, you've got plenty of daylight. From May to August, teeing off at 4pm still gives you a comfortable five or six hours. In spring and autumn, you might only get 12 or 14 holes in. But here's the thing: that's absolutely fine.
Why It's Worth It
The Price
This is the big one. Twilight rates are typically 30 to 50 percent cheaper than the standard green fee. A course charging £40 for a weekend round might offer twilight from £25 or even £20. Over a month of regular play, that adds up fast.
The Pace
Late afternoon is when courses thin out. The weekend warriors have finished, the society days are wrapping up, and you've got fairways to yourself. If you've ever been stuck behind a five-hour round on a Saturday morning, you'll appreciate how good this feels.
The Vibe
There's something about evening golf that just hits different. The light is softer, the course is quieter, and there's less pressure. It's genuinely some of the best golf you'll play all week.
After Work Golf
If you finish work at 4 or 5, twilight golf is made for you. Get to the course by half five, bang out 9 or 12 holes before dark, and you've had a proper session without giving up your entire day.
When Does Twilight Start?
It varies by course and by season. Some common patterns:
- Summer (May to August): Twilight usually starts between 3pm and 4pm. You can comfortably play 18 holes.
- Spring/Autumn (March to April, September to October): Twilight starts around 2pm to 3pm. Plan for 12 to 15 holes.
- Winter (November to February): Some courses offer "winter twilight" from as early as midday, but you'll be racing the sunset. 9 holes is realistic.
Always check with the course what time their twilight rate kicks in. It's not always obvious from the website.
Making the Most of It
Here are a few tips for getting the best twilight experience:
- Play ready golf. Don't spend ages on the tee. Hit when you're ready, not when it's your "turn."
- Pick up when you're out of it. If you've had a blow-up hole, pick up your ball and move on. Nobody is checking your card.
- Skip the range. If daylight is tight, go straight to the first tee. You can warm up with a few easy swings on the first hole.
- Know the course. If you've played it before, you'll move faster. Twilight isn't the time to be hunting for the right fairway.
- Bring a buggy. If the course allows it and your legs aren't up for speed-walking 18 holes, a buggy keeps you moving.

- Top Meadow is already one of the cheapest around, and twilight makes it even better
