The Best Golf Courses in Suffolk
Suffolk: The Underrated Golfing County
Suffolk doesn't shout about its golf, which is part of the appeal. While everyone flocks to the big-name courses in Kent and Surrey, Suffolk quietly gets on with having some of the best value and most enjoyable golf in the south east.
The county has a mix of heathland, parkland, and coastal courses. The terrain is generally flat (it's Suffolk, not the Highlands) but the course designers have done clever things with the landscape, and the quality of conditioning at the better clubs is genuinely impressive.
If you're based in Essex, Norfolk, or Cambridgeshire, Suffolk is an easy day trip. And if you're coming from London, the A12 gets you there in under two hours.
The Standout Courses
Aldeburgh Golf Club
This is the jewel in Suffolk's crown. A proper heathland course that regularly appears in top-100 lists for England. The layout runs through gorse, heather, and silver birch, and the greens are some of the best you'll find anywhere. It's not the longest course but the design demands accuracy and course management. A must-play if you're visiting Suffolk.
Good to know: It's a members' club but they welcome visitors. Book well ahead, especially in summer.
Woodbridge Golf Club
Another excellent heathland course in the east of the county. Woodbridge sits on sandy soil which means it drains brilliantly and plays firm and fast for most of the year. The layout winds through trees and heather, and the condition is consistently good. It's a proper test without being unfair.
Good to know: Great winter golf course because of the drainage. Worth the visit in any season.
Ufford Park, Woodbridge
A well-maintained parkland course with good practice facilities and an on-site hotel. Ufford Park is a popular society venue and the course has some interesting holes, particularly around the water features. The green fees are reasonable and the whole set-up is welcoming.
Good to know: They do good stay-and-play packages if you want to make a weekend of it.
Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club
A links-style course on the coast that gives you a genuine seaside golf experience. The wind off the North Sea can be fierce, and the course plays very differently depending on conditions. When it's calm, it's a lovely walk. When it's blowing, it's a proper survival test. Either way, it's brilliant.
Good to know: Check the weather forecast and bring layers. Seriously.
Stoke by Nayland, Colchester
Right on the Suffolk/Essex border, Stoke by Nayland has two 18-hole courses set in the Constable countryside. The Gainsborough course is the pick of the two, with some beautifully routed holes through mature parkland. The resort also has a hotel, spa, and restaurant, so it works well for a golf break.
Good to know: The Constable course is shorter and slightly easier, which makes it a good option for higher handicappers.
Best Value Options
Hintlesham Hall, Ipswich
A parkland course in the grounds of a historic hall. The setting is lovely, the course is well maintained, and the green fees are fair. It's a popular venue for societies and visitors.
Ipswich Golf Club (Purdis Heath)
A heathland course on the edge of Ipswich that's been around since the 1890s. The layout is classic heathland with gorse-lined fairways and fast greens. Green fees are reasonable for the quality, and it's easy to get to from the A14.
Haverhill Golf Club
On the western side of Suffolk, Haverhill is a parkland course with fair green fees and a welcoming atmosphere. It's not the most famous course in the county but it's well maintained and offers good value for a day out.
Rookery Park, Lowestoft
A solid municipal-style course at the top of the county. Affordable green fees and a relaxed attitude make it a good option if you're visiting the Lowestoft area. The course has been improving steadily and the layout has some good holes.
Planning a Suffolk Golf Trip
A few tips for getting the most out of Suffolk golf:
- Base yourself in Woodbridge or Aldeburgh for the best access to the top heathland courses
- Play heathland in winter. Suffolk's sandy-soil courses drain brilliantly and play well year-round. This is a genuine winter golf destination
- Don't skip Felixstowe Ferry. It's not as famous as the Kent links but it's a cracking day out, especially if you get a calm day
- Try a stay-and-play. Both Ufford Park and Stoke by Nayland offer packages that let you play multiple rounds and stay on-site
- Play midweek. As always, the best rates and quietest conditions are Tuesday to Thursday
